Mastery Series: Bridging your SQT to Base Network

Welcome back to the next instalment of the SubQuery Mastery Series, where we help you navigate the SubQuery Network and ensure you maximise potential rewards. This week we’re taking you right back to the start by walking you through the easy process of moving your SQT to the Base network where the SubQuery Network operates.

Although SQT is an ERC20 token minted on Ethereum Mainnet, we launched the SubQuery Network on Base for its full EVM compatibility at a fraction of the cost and gasless transactions with easy developer APIs for account abstraction. You can read more about why we chose Base here.

So you’ve purchased SQT from one of your favourite exchanges like Bybit, Crypto.com or Gate.io and now you want to use it on the SubQuery Network but you’re not sure how? Read this article and by the end, you’ll have your tokens ready to be put to work on the SubQuery Network.

Bridging SQT Ethereum to Base

SubQuery provides an official Bridge UI on the SubQuery Network App that supports bridging from Eth to Base (and vice versa). This allows you to bridge any free SQT from Ethereum to Base and is built using the same contracts and messaging protocols as the official Base Bridge.

You can get to the bridge by connecting your wallet and then selecting your wallet address in the top-right of the Network App and clicking ‘Bridge Tokens’. Or head there directly via this URL: https://app.subquery.network/bridge.

If you have connected to the SubQuery Network via Base, you must switch networks to Ethereum to use the Ethereum > Base bridge. See in the screenshot above, the greyed-out button says ‘Switch to Ethereum’. You cannot bridge your tokens until you change the network via your wallet.

You can switch by opening your wallet extension and changing the network to the Ethereum logo, like in the screenshot below.

The bridge button text will then change to ‘Start Bridge’ meaning you are now on the right network.

Now on the SubQuery Network Bridge, you will see your ‘Free SQT’ on the Ethereum network, you can opt to bridge it all or select a partial amount you wish to bridge to Base. Enter the amount and select ‘Start Bridge’.

You will also see an estimated transfer time, in our case ‘a few minutes’. So within a few minutes, you have your SQT on the Base network and are ready to start!

Import SQT to Wallet

Following the steps above you’ve bridged your SQT to Base network, however, you may not see it in your wallet — don’t panic! You simply need to import the SQT token to your wallet.

To do so, select your wallet address in the top-right corner and then select ‘Import SQT to wallet’. This will automatically take you to your wallet and you can choose ‘Add token’. After this your SQT balance should successfully show in your wallet.

Save some ETH for Gas Fees!

As the SubQuery Network is built on Base, the gas fees must be paid in Ether (ETH) on Base (you can’t use your ETH on Ethereum). If you don’t have ETH on Base, you can purchase some or swap your ETH on the Ethereum Network to the Base Network using the official Base bridge. There are several other third-party bridges however SubQuery can’t be responsible for the use of any third-party bridges.

You’re Ready to Go

Now that you have your SQT and ETH both on the Base network, the world is your oyster (or at least the SubQuery Network). You can get involved as any of the SubQuery Network participants, whether you might be running nodes, purchasing datasets or RPCs, or simply looking to stake your SQT and earn rewards — you can do it all!

The easiest way to get started, particularly for our non-technical community members, is by delegating your tokens. Delegating is taking your SQT tokens and staking them to a specific Node Operator. In exchange, you receive SQT rewards with an APY that varies but typically hovers around 15%.

Head to the SubQuery Network app to bridge your tokens and then jump over to our Mastery Series article all about delegating to start staking your SQT.
